I have completed 29 marathons and 70 ultras. PRs include marathon 3:39:34, 50K 4:49, 50 mile 8:23, 100 mile 21:14, 48 hour 153 miles, 72 hour 235 miles,and 6 day 387 miles.
I have never had so much fun or lived so intensely as I have in the past 7 years of running ultras on beautiful courses all over the country. I got hooked on ultras and I continue running them because of the people I have met and the great friendships I have gained. NOTHING is impossible!

Across The Years 2003/2004 was my first ultra. (It was, in fact, the first time I had covered more than 18 miles running.) I started running ultras not knowing anything or anybody, however I have been fortunate to have met many fine individuals (many at ATY) and to have been both participant and spectator at several fine events, and learned a little bit along the way -- and still am learning a little after each one.
I enjoy all types of races (and other events), 50KM through 72 hours so far; not just one type of race or one type of course; I find enjoyment on mountain trails and also on the track at Nardini Manor and even on roads.
T-shirts and buckles (and various other 'hardware') are nice to help remember the races we run. However, I feel it is the journey that we must focus on in races as well as life, enjoying every moment along the way so we have something to remember when the race is over and we are admiring hardware or wearing some race garment. Here's hoping to spend some time with everybody during and after the race; and may we all not reach the 'final' finish line for many years to come.

I've been enjoying marathons, multiday events, open water swims, and iron distance triathlons for years -- and have just started to test myself at ultra distance runs. I've completed 50K and 50M distance and will run several 24- and 48-hour runs before ATY. The people I have met volunteering at Ancient Oaks and L.O.S.T. have inspired me to "just run" for a few years and put multi-sport pursuits on the back burner for now.

Been running for more than 33 years, doing ultras for more than 31 years. Have completed the Ironman Triathlon (1982), four 100 milers (Leadville, Vermont, Arkansas twice). Have DNFed many more 100s.Did the Sri Chinmoy 7-day race twice and the Gibson Ranch 6-day twice. Started Barkley in 2005, compass broke, got lost, later flashlight lost, out there for 32 hours, reached only one book on the official course, a record unlikely ever to be broken. Been friends with my wife (Tricia) since 7th grade in 1942. Been in love with her since 1952.I have been the very fortunate recipient of some great genes from my parents. I try to be upbeat everyday. If I die tomorrow, no one should grieve because I have had a great life.

I started running in 2000 and have completed numerous short distance events (5K to 1/2 marathon). I started running marathons in 2005. I never considered running an ultra until I crewed Tracy Thomas and volunteered at the aid station at ATY 08-09. I couldn't believe how much fun I had and I knew that ATY had to be my first ultra. I am very excited to be a part of Across The Years.

Am greatly looking forward to my first ATY wanting to have been there years ago! Family, time, and money precluded it. The race appears to me to be the greatest collection of runners, events, and organization there now is in the USA. Seeing the names of those who have run and who are coming makes it seem like being with family. It will be an honor to participate. I am a double cancer survivor, one version still being active, and am happy to deal with minor adjustments needed to still run. I am at the end of the 2nd year recovering from a broken ankle . Dr Lovy will be glad to note I have had the loose screw removed, in fact, the whole plate and 7 screws are gone. Only the running nut remains. This year is an attempt to get back to the decline of age only. I have run the past 16 24 Hour USA Championships, the Canadian Open section of the Drummondville World Championship, Ottawa and Wakefield 24 Hr several times doing different hours and distances for training, a one time 24 Hour somewhere in MA and 4 24 Hr races at the old 1/2 mile racehorse track in Westport, NY. Results range from 80 to 120 miles. I have finished the Vt 100 Trail run 5 times and have run a dozen 50's and 2 100K's. I have completed 135 marathons. My most fun was running the width of Vt in 2 days and the length of Vt in 4 days. A year later my wife filmed a re-enactment and I added my family telling stories as a sound track. Running has become my biggest blessing through struggle, challenge, the journey, and most especially the people met, runners and volunteers. I expect only good things and new stories coming out of ATY 2010!

I'm a geezer, but a relative newbie in ultras. Lots of marathons (PR 2:57, back in the day), a handful of 50s and 100s (PR 21:57 in 2009). ATY will be my first fixed time event, and I'm really looking forward to it.

I have been actively running since 2007 when I did my first marathon, The Portland Marathon. Since 2008 I have primarily been racing triathlons, from sprint to Ironman distances. Last year, after crewing for a friend doing a solo Badwater, I jumped up and did my first 50-mile race. It was an excellent experience and the other competitors were awesome. I have made it a priority to do one ultra run a year and I was lucky enough to get into ATY.

I have been running ultramarathons since 2007 to honor one of my buddies in my unit that died the previous year. Since then I have compete in dozens of ultramarathons and regular marathons. I love the sport and getting to trash my legs with my other crazy friends. Remember-collective suffering breeds camraderie.

My name is Matt Blokzyl and I have always had the runners spirit in me. I started running in high school as a freshman. My first race was an indoor mile on a 200m track. I impressed my coach with a time of 5:40, after only one month of training, and was immediately placed on the varsity squad. I also began running the 2-mile race. The following fall I was picked up by varsity cross country and ran my first 5k in 22:22. I continued to run throughout high school and was able to improve my times greatly: 4:51 for the mile, 10:24 2-mile, and 17:36 for the 5k. After high school I joined the Air Force and settled down with a family. Although I tried to stay in shape, I ended up gaining about 40 pounds and stopped running altogether. Unfortunately, after leaving the Air force to attend school my wife and I ended up divorcing. It wasn't all bad though; my ex and I have two lovely girls together. I wanted to be a good example for them so I lost the weight I had gained and made the determination to start running again in 2004. Since then I have run 4 marathons and 1 ultramarathon. After the rush of finishing the ultra, I knew I needed more so I entered the lottery for Across the Years.

I've been running marathons and longer since 1989, but have just recently fallen in love with trail and ultra distance running in the past year. I've yet to obtain a successful 100 mile race and that is my goal at JJ100 in Oct and a 100 mile 24 hour race would be my wildest dream, but will be happy with 90 miles. In 2009/10 I was able to obtain 84 miles at the 24 Hour Race to the Future. I've volunteered at ATY and feel honored to be racing this year with the great staff and all those who make ATY such a great event!

I have completed 6 Acroos the Years (5 24h and 1 48h) from 1989 thru 2004.
I have been a trail ultrarunner in the 90's and in the mid 2000's. I did 3 running adventures in South America and climbed Kilimanjaro in 2007.
Now as older than 60, I still trail run but just up to the marathon distance.
My goal in December is to test my body!!!

I work at the U of A. I'm married with three children. My wife, Vickie, and my children (Annie, 21; Matthew, 17; and Gina, 13) all have no interest at all in running, let alone my running endeavors; to them it is merely proof of my oddness. This will be my fifth time competing, make that participating, in my favorite ultra event. I have modest goals: to have even more fun this year than last year.

Lost all interest in road-running after my 1st trail ultra in 2001, the Arkansas Traveler 100. Have been running 5+ hundred milers a year since, with shorter ultras as part of training. Will run until I can't make the cutoffs any more.

I re-discovered running in August 2008. Kicked asphalt in 2009 (15+ NYRR races). Ran my first 50K (very technical trail race) before running a marathon. BQed on my one and only attempt in Phily and looked for another challenge - ultrarunning. My first 50M was 10 months after the first half, and a month later I ran my first 100m. Too much, too soon! - I learned this the hard way getting injured during the 100M (medial tibial stress syndrome) and being off running for close to three months. Hope to train smart and achieve my goal of 200M @ the 72-hour.

I have run off and on throughout my life (alternated with playing rugby and sailing for the most part)but joined the Athletiek Vereniging Monnickendam here in The Netherlands about 10 year ago and became more structured in my approach. Through the club, I also became involved in racing and have found the various 6 Hour events and the 50 Km's to be my favourite events locally. This is my first multi-day event so whatever mileage I am able to run will be PR.

I am Deborah Goodwin and was bit with the running bug a couple years back. I've done a few ultras now so I'm excited to see what I can do in this 24 hour run! I'm also looking forward to spending time with fellow runners that educate and inspire me. :) I love this quote: "You have to wonder at times what you're doing out there. Over the years, I've given myself a thousand reasons to keep running, but it always comes back to where it started. It comes down to self-satisfaction and a sense of achievement." by Steve Prefontaine

This will be my first year at ATY and my first attempt at a 24 hour event. My running history shows that I have a habit of biting off more than I can chew. At 19, I entered my first road race, a 25K, having previously only run 6 miles at a time. Somehow I finished and won my age group... by default. I was the only one in my age group! Last October, I surprised myself by running 62 miles in my first 12 hour run at the SF One Day. The farthest I'd run leading up to that was 26.2. I'm mixing things up this time around and actually training specifically to target ATY. My parents think I'm nuts for doing this, and haven't bought my argument that they must have done something right (or terribly wrong) for me to want to celebrate the new year by running for 24 hours!

Started running ultras in 1979 and have completed 97 ultra events, including nine 48-hour races (PR 216.41 mi.), 25 24-hour races (PR 131 mi.), 18 100-mile trail races (PR 21:36), and one 100-mile road race (17:56). If all goes well with this summer's trail races, ATY will be my 101st ultra and first-ever 72-hour race. I had a great time at the last ATY 48-hour and look forward to seeing all my ATY running friends again.

I had gastric bypass surgery on December 11, 2008 because I was 384 pounds. As a part of my lifestyle change I started walking and jogging on the treadmill and riding my exercise bike at the house. As a point of encouragement and to offer me a change from staying inside all the time, a friend and fellow worker told me that I should sign up to do Pat's Run on April 18, 2009 with her, her husband, and another co-worker. That was my first run. I somehow finished that 4.2 miles in 58 minutes and 7 seconds and in that short period of time, changed my life forever. From that point on I was hooked! I was addicted! Now, 212 lbs and 77 races later, just over one year has passed and I have made some great friends and logged a ton of miles along the way. I have done a ton of smaller races (5K, 10K, and half marathons), four marathons, a 50K, and a 24-Hour run in which I was able to run 100K. In the time between writing this and until running ATY, I will be adding on four more marathons, another two 50Ks, and a 50-miler -- so I will be ready to roll come race time! I am loving the ultras as they are a whole other animal, and the people gladly welcome you into the insane family -- the brood, if you will! Finally I have found a place to call home!!! Thank you to everyone that I have met along the way and to everyone at Aravaipa Running! I look forward to many ATY runs to come!

I started running in second grade to be like my older sisters, who were my heroes. Although I started my running career with just two miles a day, that low level was enjoyable enough to keep me running consistently as a youngster. I did my first marathon (the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon) while in college and was pleased with the experience so much that I did many more before graduating. (Perhaps I'd have graduated sooner if I spent more times studying the books than running.)
I became aware of ultrarunning from coverage of Badwater on TV. I thought it was something I'd like to do, but ultrarunning didn't come to the forefront of my mind until I heard about the Javelina Jundred. Since it was nearby, I had no excuse not to do it. I signed up for the Lost Boys 50-miler in May of 2005 to make sure the 100-miler was a realistic goal for that autumn. I finished it. My baptism included being certifiably lost for roughly nine miles. Considering that I don't see the results for that year posted on the Lost Boys Web site, perhaps I would just like to forget the details of that event. Just kidding; it is a beautiful course. My first Javelina Jundred resulted in a 50-cent-piece size blister on my foot, but it was my mental and emotional collapse in the middle of the night which resulted in me deciding to lie down on the road 1.5 miles from race headquarters and tell my friend I wasn't having fun and so wasn't moving any further and so please go get the car. I am not proud of that moment, but because completing it did not come readily, it fueled me to go back the next year and successfully finish it. Since then I have been alternating participating in triathlons and ultra running. Something I really like about ultra running is that it gets me to places to see things in nature that I wouldn't otherwise make the time to witness.

I've been running ultras for the last 10 years or so. While I originally ran trail ultras, I switched to timed ultras since it was alot easier to train on the roads and I avoided getting lost during races! I have been on the U.S. National 24-Hour team for the past four years and I broke the American Women's 50-54 age-group 12 Hour record with 72.96 miles at the North Coast 24-Hour race in Cleveland in 2009. This will be my first attempt at a 48 hour race and am looking forward to the challenge.

Steve Hughes is a 62-year-old, second-generation Arkansas Razorback. Because of osteoarthritis throughout his body, he couldn’t run from around age 30 until medicine and arthritis treatment advanced. After reaching 56 years of age, he was able to begin running marathons and ultramarathons on a regular basis. He averages over 20 marathons each year and is a frequent 5:00-5:30 pacer at marathons around the country.
Steve’s wife Donna was born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky, so Steve planned his 2010 running schedule with that heritage in mind. At Louisville, Kentucky on April 24, 2010, Steve completed his 100th marathon. When Steve finishes a race in Hawaii in January, he will become the first Arkansan and (as of this date) only the 61st runner in the world to ever complete a marathon or longer in all 50 states on at least two occasions.

In 2003 I ran my first ultra, Muir Beach 50k in the Marin Headlands. Since then, my love of running long distance has grown- fed in particular by my love of mountain trails. From 2006- mid 2007, I lived in Beijing, China-- wasn't able to run any races that year but I did work as a volunteer staff member at Racing the Planet's Gobi March in western China. In 2007 I returned to California and, relieved to again have access to trails, I ran/hiked 500 miles of the PCT in 18 days, and ran my first 100 miler that October, Javelina 100. In 2008, I paced a friend at Hardrock (what an amazing treat to run half that course) and look forward very much to the day when I'll be lucky enough to run there. I ran Angeles Crest 100 that year and completed the 48 hour at ATY with 118 miles. After a 9-month break (my last race was Miwok 100k in 2009), I'm back to training, looking forward to a great summer with more time on the PCT and another opportunity to enjoy 100 miles, this time in Utah at the Bear 100. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to run at this year's ATY and can't wait to see what it's like to try the 72 hour!

Before a few years ago at ATY I had never run a 72 hour race. (not that I actually ran that much in 2008) I had run through 72 hours in a few six day events, and I had run over 200 miles five times in 48 hour events. I ran Across the years a couple of times many years ago when I was young and dumb, so I figure I should run it at least once again now that I am old (and still dumb).

Norbert started trail running in 2006 when he came to the San Francisco Bay Area, moving with his family from Pennsylvania for work reasons. In the same year he ran his first ultra and got hooked on endurance runs. Since then he has completed more than 35 ultras, among them numerous 50Ks, 50-milers and the Tahoe Rim Trail 100M endurance run.
Norbert runs approximately 1200 miles per year, most of them on beautiful Northern Californian trails, but also enjoys the occasional jaunt in neighborhoods around his favorite mountain in the area, Mount Diablo. He loves the running community and the opportunities that running gives him to see new places.

Running for 30 yrs - doing ultras for past 5 - have done about 20 ultras of different lengths - I really like the fixed time format. I am always fascinated at the parallel between running an ultra and the events in our everyday lives with the many highs and lows. Read an article that sums up my thoughts about ultras and life - Dreams lie at the start - reality lies at the middle - proof lies at the end.

I have been running since 1983: approximately 190-plus marathons and 190-plus ultras. Stopped counting last year. ATY has always been one of my favorites, from the time Jon and I participated and at least one time when Madeline also participated. I have gotten slower over the years, but the challenge is still there. Last year I received the coveted 1000-mile jacket, which I wear with great pride every chance I get. This year's goals are to do at least 115 miles, work with Chris to help other runners achieve their goals, and meet friends, many which are the greatest people on the planet.

Don Lundell began running in 1998, when he decided that he would train for and run a marathon. Since then, he has run over 150 marathons and ultra marathons throughout the United States. His accomplishments include some of the toughest endurance runs in the country, with over a dozen runs of 100 miles or more. He has run the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run three times. In 2001 he completed the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning, which consists of four rugged 100 mile races in the space of 4 months. The races were Western States, Vermont, Leadville and Wasatch, all of which Don was running for the first time. Don has run several 24-hour runs, in each one topping 100 miles. In July 2003, Don finished the Badwater Ultramarathon for the second time--135 miles through Death Valley from Badwater to Mount Whitney. One of Don's most creative runs was in May 2003, when he ran 114 miles to complete a Quadruple Quadruple of the Dipsea trail. Don is one of the owners of ZombieRunner in Palo Alto, CA.

I have been running marathons since 2004 and by ATY should have run over 100 marathon or greater distances.
In 2005, after successfully completing two Marine Corps Marathons, I ran my first ultra, the JFK 50-miler in my home state of Maryland. To date (May 2010) I have run six 100-milers, ten 50-milers and 50KM races, respectively. Specific ultras include: four Umstead 100-milers, two Vermont 100-milers, one Javalina Jundred 100-wuss out 100KM, five JFK 50-milers, two Rocky Raccoon 50-milers and many other ultra events including: the 24-hour Race Around the Lake, New River Trails 50KM, Vermont 50KM, Niagara Ultra 50KM, Tails for Trails 40-miler, ICY 8-hour.
My PRs for various ultra distances include: 100 miles: 24:58 (Umstead in 2010), 50 miles: 9:48 (Rocky Raccoon 50/100 in 2010), 50IM: 6:06 (New River Trails in 2009), Marathon: 4:09 (Frederick Marathon in 2009).
My finish placement for ultra events has varied from last overall (Umstead 100-miler in 2007, Niagara Ultra 50KM 2007 & 2008, Tails for Trails 40-miler 2009, VT50 km 2009), last place female (VT100 in 2009) to a recent second place overall female in the ICY-8. I consider “my people†to be the back of the packers and my goal simply is to finish with a smile on my face and to have lots of fun throughout the race!
I always run with a sparkly fanny pack, a camera, and typically carry my cell phone. My silver sparkly fanny pack has traveled well over 1,000 miles of races with me, while blue sparkely has traveled over 800 miles in races. It may be of interest to note that blue sparkly comes complete with a mountain goat: “Jim Baa-eahhhnâ€. Numerous times I have fallen in ultra’s. Jim Baahhnn shakes it off a lot better than I; I tend to enjoy a few moments off my feet while deciding whether if I am going to get up or simply hope runners leap over me or perhaps pick me up and carry me to the finish.
My most important piece of equipment is my camera; it has logged more than 1,000 miles in races. My current PR for number of pictures in an event is 1700 pictures at the 2010 Umstead 100 miler (taken over 24 hours and 58 minutes). I am undecided if either fanny pack will be joining me during the 2010 Across The Years but suspect I will carry one for my camera’s benefit. However, I hope with the 500-meter lap format I will be able to jettison some items from sparkly so I am carrying less than five pounds which is what sparkly typically weighs.

I started limping around the hood at age 27 when I quit smoking. I was inspired by an Olympic women's marathon runner, Fatima Roba. Eventually I entered a few 5Ks, 4-milers, 15Ks, and established myself as a mid-pack runner. Always wanted to run a marathon but got sidetracked with life events, medical problems, eventually registered for London marathon while living overseas but didn't get in. Ran Houston marathon a couple of times. An Internet friend sent me a link to an article about Pam Reed and I discovered ultras. Ran first 50K in Huntsville Texas, "Rocky Raccoon," in 2006. Have since run a bunch of ultras, every distance, DFLed one 100, DNFed a few more, ran a few half marathons and 25Ks with my kids.

I am currently 4 yrs out from cancer. I was lucky. I caught it early enough for my doctors to work their magic. I just showed up for treatment and did what I was told.
I started racing after chemo and during my year of IV herceptin, a drug infused every 3rd week. Since then I reached a distance milestone of 110.67 miles with a 19:38 hr 100 mile split. I have logged over 165 races since 10/06 - mostly short stuff from 5k's upward, but managed 10 ultras from 6/09 through 1/10 (50k through 100 and 24hrs) I am hoping 2010 will be a great year.
8/5/10 will be my 5-year mark when I finally go back to being a regular ole' non-cancer-recurrence-risk version of myself. Except now I am an ultrarunner and have accomplished more than I ever imagined I could upon hearing those words: You Have Cancer.

Mike has been a near-lifelong runner, with close to 30,000 miles run in the past 37 years. He's run more than 400 races, including more than 40 marathons, and he came to ultrarunning during his mid-life crisis. Since 2003, Mike has run about four dozen ultras from 50Ks to multiday events. He's DNF'ed many of the best 100-mile races, including Umstead, Old Dominion, Massanutten, Cascade Crest, Grand Tetons, Western States, and Vermont. Mike has finished seven 100-mile events, completing the Ancient Oaks 100-Mile Run five times and finishing both Mother Road 100s, MR100 2 in a personal best time of 23:49. He's also 2-for-4 in finishing the LOST 118-Mile Endurance Run. He's been Race Director for more than 400 races in the past 20 years, and he's now Race Director of three ultras - the Ancient Oaks 100-Mile Endurance Run, the LOST 118-Mile Endurance Run, and the Strolling Jim (TM) 40 Mile Run. Mike also owns a computer-chip race timing and scoring company.
Mike has run in five 24-hour events, notching more than 100 miles in three of them, with a PR of 103.4 miles at the FANS 24-Hour race. He ran 123 miles in 2004's Across The Years 48-Hour event, and he had a personal best 140.3 miles at the Houston Ultra 48-Hour race. He's run the ATY 72-Hour event three times, with a PR of 183 miles. He's also completed the Great Eastern Endurance Run 100K three times, the JFK 50-Mile Run, the inaugural Ghost Town 38-Mile race, and several 50K trail races.
Mike has a touch of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, which is displayed by his two running streaks, the first one a 9-year-plus streak that ended in 1989, and his current streak which is now 14-plus years and counting. He runs a minimum of two miles each day.
Mike is an independent Certified Financial Planner by trade, and co-founded the Sailfish Striders Running Club, located in Stuart, Florida. He's blessed to be the father of a 14-year-old son named Dan. Mike's PRs include a 2:57:59 marathon (a long time ago!), 50K in 4:54, 50 miles in 9:38, 100K in 13:49, and 100 miles in 22:49:51 (at the San Diego One-Day event).

I started running in early 2002 with the goal of running a marathon. For the next two years I was constantly getting injured during each training cycle and decided to switch from road running to trail running. I met some wonderful people when I started trail running and was introduced to ultras in 2003. Since then I have completed a few 24-hour runs, a few 50Ks and 50 milers. In 2005 I finished the Marathon des Sables and got my first 100-mile finish at the Grand Teton Ultras. In 2006 I finished Badwater in a time of 46:22. Since then I have finished a few more 100 milers.

I have been running for over 26 years and have completed over 100 ultras and marathons, and I do it as much for the self-renewing, creative, centering, and spiritual benefits as I do for the physical benefits of running. I also run to raise awareness and funds for cancer-related programs and services in my community. Having the health, ability and desire to run ultras is a gift. I am fortunate to have met so many fascinating and unique people as a result of participating in this sport. I try to challenge myself in some way every day. I see every day as an adventure.

2006 was my first ATY and I had a lot of fun. I liked the people and the gummy bears and soup. My secret weapon to keep me awake was my iPod with the Sponge Bob songs but actually I still slept about 10 hours!
This year I have been running some races like one milers and 5k's and my first Vail Hill Climb Run. I also climbed my first 14er. My goals for this next year are to run more miles at ATY and to do a mile faster than my record 6:43. I also like all sports especially soccer and basketball and I like to read. My favorite TV show is Drake and Josh.

I have been running for over 30 years mainly as an opportunity to get together with friends and also to relax after work. I did very few races until I discovered ultrarunning 4 years ago. I enjoy running for days and dealing with the mental challenge when it's getting tough. It's also a nice opportunity to meet people.

Always eager to blow my own horn: 27 100-mile finishes, lots of 50-milers and 50Ks. This will be my third time at ATY, after having competed in the 24-hour (105 miles) and the 72-hour (154 miles), where I learned to appreciate the fine medical staff at ATY to deal with my cramping and lactic acid filled quads for the last day and a half at the 72-hour. This year I hope to be more reasonable in my goal and try out the 48-hour. I've slowed down somewhat as I have aged (like a fine limburger cheese), but will be enjoying the comradeship, conversations and company with everyone out there, whatever the venue they choose to run, as we all run "Across The Years". Maybe some of us will hold hands and sign kumbaya. Or maybe not.

I started running in my mid-teens, but not as part of any team. Just on my own, on the streets of my hometown. This was the mid-1970s, and one of my younger brothers still believes that I was one of the first "joggers" in our small town. I didn't run any while in college, but started again after graduation. Ran five road marathons in the last half of the 1990s (albeit slowly - PR is 4:07). I didn't know that ultras existed until I read about the JFK 50-miler in Runner's World - my first thought was "there's no way I could ever run that far". Ran my first ultra (Lake McMurtry 50K outside of Stillwater, OK) in April 2007. Have since run a total of 11 ultras (as of mid-May 2010). I've run three fixed-duration races (one 12-hour and two 24-hour, my PR being about 106 miles at FANS 24-hour in June 2009), and have discovered that I really enjoy the challenges of fixed-time races. I am really excited to have made it into ATY, and am looking forward to the challenge and the overall experience, especially having the opportunity to hang out with such a great group of folks. I am hoping to run in the Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 6-day race in the spring of 2011, and am in the early planning stages for a solo unsupported run across my birth-state of Maryland (currently estimating about 385 miles, starting at the West Virginia-Maryland border, and ending with my feet in the Atlantic Ocean).

I started walking in 2004 in order to get healthy and caught the marathon bug. Walked my first marathon in February 2006, second in October 2008, and now am up to a total of ten marathons, five 50Ks, one 50-miler, two attempts at 100 miles, (the second attempt made it to 72.22 miles), and numerous shorter distance races. Between the registration for this race and the actual event, I am planning to do my first 24-hour event and one more marathon.
I am entering the race as a walker. I know I will not break any course records, but am planning to walk at least 80 miles in the 24 hours I will be on the course, with my ultimate goal being to join the ranks of US Centurion some time in the near future.

I'm a long time ultra runner. RD of the OTHTC High Desert 50K/30K for 15 years. Have run ATY twice, the 24-hour in 2007, and the 48-hour in 2008. I'm hoping for 62 miles for this year's 24-hour. I've have had troubles with my hip for two years and now have an Achilles problem. If at all possible will try for more miles. Looking forward to seeing the ATY family again.

Gillian started running in 1997. In 1999, she completed her first marathon and became hooked on distance running, particularly runs on trails. Since then, she has completed over 100 races ranging from the marathon distance to 135 miles. She has run the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run, in addition to 100 mile races in Texas and Arkansas. She finished first woman in the Ruth Anderson 100K in 2000 and in the Pony Express 50K in 2002. In the FANS 24 Hour Run in 2004, Gillian placed second with 104 miles. Gillian enjoys runs that she designs with Don Charles Lundell. These have included a 100 mile run on Angel Island, and running the Western States course in reverse. Her favorite run was the 13 days that she and Don spent running the entire Bay Area Ridge Trail, including the dedicated trail and connecting road routes, totaling 500 miles.

I've run over 60 ultras with 26 100-mile (or 100-mile plus) finishes and six sub-24-hour 100-mile trail races. I particularly like the "timed" events - like ATY - and have run six 24-hour, two 48-hour and one 72-hour ultras. Highlights include USATF national 55-59 age group record for 24 hours (121.4 miles Olander 2001), 7th place male finisher Badwater (40:45 2002), first place ATY 72-hour (241 miles 2003), first place at the Equalizer 24-hour (136 age equalized miles 2004), 60 and over course record holder at Double Chubb 50K (5:16 2006). The mountains are my nemesis - sure would like a WS or Leadville finish. After being off most of the past year with an achilles injury I am gradually getting back to training and am really looking forward to ATY this December. What a great event!!! In addition to the ultras, I've finished 60 marathons with a PR of 2:58 (1983). More recently I got first place in the 60 and over age group in the St. Louis marathon (3:40 2006). I'm a member of the SLUGs, the St. Louis Ultrarunners Group (club activities and races at www.stlouisultrarunnersgroup.net. I made the now infamous "toenail necklace" from my ultra-marathon toenail "droppings." Started running 2 weeks before turning 46 year old in 1983. Entered only local 10K's & 1/2 Marathons. Ran first Marathon in 1985. Finished Boston Marathon 6 times, 1986-1991. Best Marathon time 3:08. Recent Marathon, St. George 2006, age 69 4:07. Entered first Ultra-marathon in 1987 and have finished over 100 since. Finished first 100 mile event, Western States 100 in 1990, age 53. Finished 27 100 mile Ultras, including Western States 13 times (11 consecutive at ages 60-70). Best Western States finish at age 63, 25:50. I have tried to finish the Grand Slam of Ultra-running 4 times and failed. I believe someone my age can do it so will try again in 2010. I believe we are created by God and are able to do far more than we think but we are limited by our minds. Running 100 mile races I have learned many lessons about living the Christian Life, which is an endurance event. The Bible says to run a race to win and applies that to living the Christian Life. In Endurance Races all who finish are winners and get awards. I am thankful that God has allowed me to be an example as I age.

After running 233 miles at ATY in 2008, I realized that I would rather go for more milage in 2 days before eventually working up to 250 plus mile runs, (next year)... For now I'm going for 200K in 24 hours and 200 miles over 48 hours. Everyone I've talked to that have done 135+ in 24 all say it's all in your head to get that mileage; We'll see!!!

I have been running ultras for only two years as a means to find my personal limits. It has since turned into a passion of personal exploration and shared community. No huge accomplishments; a couple of 50-milers, 50k and I hope I will have tackled my first 100 in November prior to this years running of ATY!

Some old guy. I really don't know how much I have run; maybe fifty 50Ks? about thirty 50-milers? all kinds of assorted stuff. AC 100 10 times, WS 100 about 7 times, JJ 100 once, finished two 100Ks, GTR 100 about 3 times, RR 100 once. Some other stuff: MDS 2 times gonna think about it--ran from the cops a lot when I was young.

I began running in 2003. In 2004, my brother-in-law made the fateful comment that as much as I got faster and faster the longer I ran that I should consider ultra marathons. I had surgery late in 2004 and began my walking career. The longer I would go, I would throw a little running in. This is the year I plan to get back to running. While I loved timed events so I don't have to worry about cutoffs, I'd like to see my times be something "approaching real people time" at least for my age.

I used to think the sun rose and set on Western States back in 1992, and then I discovered multiday racing. It's been quite a trip. The Sri Chinmoy races became bi-yearly events for me, and in 1994 I set an American record for 6 days: 450 miles, age 55-59. Fall of 1994 I tried the 1000 mile race and DNFed, but met Jesse Riley and was never quite sane again. Summer of 1995 I finished Trans America, about 3000 miles: 10th of 10 finishers. Immediately my second try at 1000 miles, second DNF in fall of 1995. In 1995 I almost reached my goal of 5000 race miles in a single year, ending at about 4900 race miles. Finally finished the 1000 mile race in 1996 just barely under the 15 day time limit.
Well, 1997 was my year. At age 59 I ran the 1000 in 14 days 10 hours; at the time it was a masters world record for the 1000. In that race I also got the American 48-hour age group record: 201 miles, set in the first 48 hours of the 1000 mile race. Then in 1997, on to the 48-hour in Surgeres, France, a really hard effort - reward 200.5 miles, set a new world age group record at the time for 60-64. Lots of DNFs followed, including Trans Australia, Run Across America 2002, Trans Europe 2003, and Run Across America 2004. Four DNFs at Spartathlon Athens to Sparta.
But I discovered France and the race which has become my signature race. Transe Gaule the race across France and I have a special relationship, so many memories and race photo's, fell in love twice, and now have finished the race seven times earning seven stars on my trophy and t-shirt. On to Spartathlon 2005, probably my crowning glory. I actually kissed the foot of Lyonites -- the statue in Sparta that signifies completion of the race. I still can't believe it -- to run 150 miles in 36 hours, my finish time actually 35 hours 40 minutes. Finished Comrades last yaar sub 11 hrs. At Columbus 24 this year 99.5 miles a pending US 70-75 age record..
